After a warm and promising spring, an unexpected frost in the last weeks of april poses a great threat to the 2016 vintage – many parts of Austria have to struggle with a deminished harvest. The late spring and summer months are marked by a humid climate, strong rainfall and scattered heat waves, challenging biologic and conventional vintners alike.
The bottom line of the vintage in Lower Austria is still satisfactory though, with around 1.6m hl it yields a 20% increase to the previous year, even though Wachau, Thermenregion and other areas report lower results.
Markus Huber on the 2016 vintage:
“It all worked out in the end. Even after the frost and a challenging vegetation period we managed to produce a prototypical vintage: wines that offer fruit, spice and a lot of joy.”
